Eighteen indigenous human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) have been confirmed in six provinces in the Netherlands, with three deaths. Infections were acquired in Utrecht, Noord-Brabant, Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Overijssel, and Gelderland. An additional death associated with WNV was reported in a resident of Drenthe who developed symptoms while traveling in Southeastern Europe, outside the total indigenous cases. Surveillance also registered infections in 58 horses, 39 birds, and three mosquito pools. The crude fatality rate is 16.7%. Analysis of blood donations in at-risk areas has been initiated.
