Extremadura reports a new case of West Nile fever in a 47-year-old male in Don Benito. The second death from the disease in 2026 is confirmed, corresponding to an 88-year-old man from the Don Benito-Villanueva de la Serena area, admitted to Don Benito Hospital. In total, 34 cases and two deaths have been registered in Extremadura in 2026.
Currently, there are three patients admitted to hospitals in Don Benito-Villanueva, Mérida, and Cáceres, and one of the patients admitted in Don Benito has been discharged. 80% of human infections are asymptomatic.
