The Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) reported 92 new confirmed cases of Ebola, including 33 deaths, in the last 24 hours in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, Haut-Uele, and Tshopo. Thirty-six recoveries were also reported.
As of September 2, 2016, the DRC has recorded 6,342 confirmed cases and 3,072 deaths. Ituri is the epicenter, accounting for 81.4% of the country’s confirmed cases. The disease was first identified in 1976, with notable outbreaks in Sudan, Zaire, Kikwit, Uganda, and West Africa. Vaccines and treatments exist for the Zaire strain, but not for the Sudan or Bundibugyo strains.
