The Americas have recorded 47,459 confirmed cases of measles in 2016 as of July 18, the highest number in 22 years. Forty-four deaths have been reported, compared to 32 last year. The public health risk is considered “very high.”
Guatemala leads with 30,371 cases and 26 deaths, followed by Mexico (12,255 cases, 17 deaths), the United States (2,260 cases), and Peru (1,277 cases). These four countries account for 95% of the cases. Canada reports 1,107 cases. Contributing factors include vaccination gaps, susceptible individuals, and high mobility.
PAHO recommends intensifying vaccination efforts and early case detection.
