General data on traffic accidents in Turkey:
Turkey has a high rate of road accidents, due to both the volume of traffic and the growth of the vehicle fleet, the widespread use of motorcycles, and the combination of modern highways with high-risk secondary, urban, and rural roads.
According to official TurkStat data for 2024, 266,854 accidents with fatalities or injuries were recorded in Turkey, resulting in a total of 6,351 deaths: 2,713 at the scene of the accident and 3,638 within 30 days after being transferred to medical facilities. An additional 385,117 injuries were reported. This equates to an average of 731 accidents with victims per day, 17.4 deaths daily, and 1,055 injuries daily.
In 2025, data released by TurkStat shows a total of 1,549,574 traffic accidents, of which 288,321 resulted in fatalities or injuries, and 1,261,253 resulted only in property damage. That year, 6,035 deaths and 403,937 injuries were reported, with a daily average of 789.9 accidents with victims, 16.5 deaths, and 1,106.7 injuries.
Risk profile: most accidents with fatalities or injuries occur in urban or residential areas. In 2025, 86.5% of accidents with victims occurred within populated areas and 13.5% outside of them. This is relevant for travelers because the risk is not limited to long-distance road journeys: it also affects urban commutes, taxis, motorcycles, pedestrian crossings, and intersections.
Vulnerable road users: pedestrians, motorcyclists, cyclists, and scooter riders account for a significant portion of fatalities. In 2025, vulnerable road users accounted for 2,680 deaths, equivalent to 44.4% of all road fatalities. Motorcycle traffic is also a significant concern: 1,334 motorcycle drivers and 191 motorcycle passengers died that year. Frequent causes: over 90% of accidents were attributed to driver error. Among the most common factors are failure to adapt speed to road conditions, weather, or traffic, failure to yield the right-of-way, and rear-end collisions. Areas and situations of greatest risk for travelers: large cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, and Bursa experience heavy traffic, aggressive driving, motorcycles, pedestrians, and unexpected maneuvers. Tourist routes to Cappadocia, the Aegean coast, the Turkish Riviera, Pamukkale, or eastern Anatolia can involve long journeys, fatigue, overtaking, trucks, changing weather conditions, and reduced nighttime lighting.
