The third human death from myiasis caused by the New World screwworm (NWS) has been reported in Honduras in 2026. The country has accumulated 176 confirmed human cases, more than half the number of cases registered in 2025.
The most recent victim was an 85-year-old woman from the department of Olancho. Those who have died share risk factors such as advanced age and underlying health conditions. The highest incidence is concentrated in seven departments. Health authorities are issuing guidelines for the prevention and management of wounds.
