Surveillance of West Nile Virus Infections in Europe – 2026

June 20, 2026

From the beginning of 2026 until June 17, Italy and North Macedonia reported three human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) infection. There are currently three affected areas.

The ECDC will publish weekly and monthly reports with updates on areas at risk for locally acquired WNV. Weather conditions are favorable for mosquito-borne transmission, and more cases are expected. Public health authorities should report cases via EpiPulse Cases. Blood facilities should implement temporary deferral criteria for donors from WNV risk areas.
