Leaders of the Ethiopian region of Tigray announce the start of a new war against the federal government, with fighting breaking out in Tigray and two neighboring regions. This breaks a four-year peace agreement. The 2020-2022 civil war resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. The TPLF has formed an alliance with six other armed groups to overthrow the government. The TPLF claims to have taken control of airports and launched an offensive in Afar and Amhara, fighting alongside local groups. Ethiopian Airlines has suspended flights to the region.
