A sixth death has been reported in the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak on the Upper East Side, which has affected 90 people since the beginning of July. More than 70 people have been hospitalized, and six remain hospitalized. No new cases have been diagnosed since July 17. The exposure is linked to a cooling tower contaminated with Legionella bacteria.
Cooling towers in three ZIP codes (10028, 10128, and 10075) have been tested, identifying 56 buildings with live bacteria. Cleaning and disinfection of these towers has been ordered. This is the second fatal Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Manhattan in two years.
