A Salmonella outbreak linked to pet turtles has grown to 20 confirmed cases in 12 states, with 5 hospitalizations. Half of those affected are children under 5 years old. Illnesses began between June 6 and August 22, 2026.

The identified strain is Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate+. Turtles with shells less than 4 inches long are a known source of illness, and their sale as pets has been federally prohibited since 1975, although they continue to be sold illegally. Caution is recommended when acquiring turtles and hygiene measures should be practiced.
