Russia dumps anthrax-infected cattle in Kherson, creating contamination risks

June 24, 2026

Ukraine‘s military intelligence agency (HUR) accuses Russian occupation authorities in Kherson Oblast of dumping anthrax-infected cattle at animal burial sites that fail to meet sanitary standards.

Up to 50 burial sites have been identified, 10 of them high-risk, near settlements such as Askania-Nova, Skadovsk, and Zaliznyi Port.

Anthrax spores can remain viable in the soil for decades, raising concerns about long-term environmental contamination and the risk of an anthrax outbreak, which could be considered bioterrorism.
