In week 29 of 2026, the activity of the main respiratory viruses in the European Union and the European Economic Area remained at baseline and inter-epidemic levels.
The circulation of SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus, and influenza was low. The positivity rate in primary care was 1.8% for SARS-CoV-2, 1.3% for influenza, and 0.5% for RSV. In patients hospitalized for severe acute respiratory infection, the percentages were even lower. The 2025-2026 influenza season was dominated by influenza A, primarily A(H3).
An increase in all-cause mortality was detected during weeks 26 to 28 in people over 45 years of age in several countries, not attributed to respiratory viruses.
Europe is experiencing a calm and clearly interseasonal respiratory situation.
