Possible sexual transmission of dermatophilosis among men who have sex with men in Barcelona, Spain

June 15, 2026

Nine cases of dermatophilosis diagnosed in Barcelona, Spain, between December 2025 and March 2026 are reported.

The cases involved cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM), with a median age of 47 years. None of the patients had contact with animals or traveled to tropical regions.

Four patients had concomitant sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and three reported engaging in chemsex. The lesions manifested as a pruritic, folliculitis-like rash. All patients were treated with antibiotics, resulting in complete resolution of the lesions in most cases. Genomic analyses suggest that the isolates could represent a potentially novel Dermatophilus taxon.
