New case of Hantavirus in Spain, under quarantine

May 25, 2026

A new case of hantavirus has been reported in Spain. The affected individual is a close contact of a previous case, identified during the epidemiological monitoring of Spaniards evacuated from the Hondius cruise ship.

The patient had been in quarantine at the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid since May 10 and has been transferred to the High-Level Isolation Unit. The remaining evacuees continue to be monitored. The incubation period for the virus ranges from one to six weeks. The case was detected within the isolation and control system, therefore the risk to the general population remains unchanged.
