Four deaths and 36 cases of poisoning, including among minors, were reported after consuming tequila adulterated with a high concentration of methanol at a quinceañera celebration in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico.
Approximately 600 people attended the event. The Guanajuato State Health Department and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) treated those affected, resulting in several deaths and hospitalizations.
The State Attorney General’s Office has identified those responsible for distributing the adulterated product. Methanol poisoning is a serious public health problem associated with the consumption of adulterated alcohol.
