Italy reinstates border controls with Spain in the Schengen area

August 4, 2026

Italy has temporarily suspended its Schengen Area agreement with Spain for one month, reinstating border controls on flights and maritime connections from Spain. The measure, which came into effect on August 1 and runs until September 1, is justified by a threat to public order, internal security, and the management of migration flows, following irregular entries recorded in Ceuta.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the decision on July 31 as an extraordinary measure to protect national security. Document checks are being carried out upon arrival of Spanish flights at airports such as Rome-Fiumicino, primarily targeting non-EU citizens to verify their Schengen entry documentation.

The measure does not suspend connections, but may result in longer disembarkation times and queues.
