Increase in suspected cholera cases in Nigeria

July 27, 2026

Health facilities in Borno State, in northeastern Nigeria, are facing increasing pressure due to a cholera outbreak. Since May, more than 35,500 suspected cases and 198 deaths have been reported.

The outbreak has spread rapidly, attributed to overcrowding, limited access to clean water, poor sanitation, and inadequate waste management. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has expanded its emergency response, supporting treatment centers and rehydration points. The Nigerian government has activated its incident management system. The outbreak has spread to Plateau State, with 102 suspected cases reported. There is a strong emphasis on improving access to clean water, sanitation, surveillance, and timely treatment, as well as vaccination campaigns.
