Increase in crocodile encounters in Sarawak, Malaysia

August 3, 2026

The Malaysian state of Sarawak is experiencing an increase in encounters between crocodiles and local communities. The crocodile population exceeded 25,000 in 2024. Between 2023 and 2025, 22 deaths were recorded, and five more have occurred so far in 2026.

Authorities are implementing conservation and safety measures, including hunting licenses and an app for reporting sightings, seeking a balance between protecting the species and ensuring public safety. Despite the increased frequency of sightings, attacks have decreased compared to two decades ago.
