Two deaths due to malaria have been registered in Mumbai, breaking a three-year period without deaths from this disease. This event marks a worrying milestone in the city’s public health.
According to data from the National Center for Vector-Borne Disease Control, malaria cases in Bombay have doubled since 2022—the year the city registered 3,985 infections—to reach 10,163 in 2025, representing a 155% increase. However, the number of cases remains below the peak registered in 2004, when there were 14,756 cases and 23 deaths.
The number of cases in 2026 already represents 91.5% of the 10,163 cases reported throughout the entire year 2025, according to data from the state health department.
