Health authorities in Yucatán have confirmed the first death from human myiasis associated with the screwworm.
The victim, a 79-year-old woman from Mérida, suffered from diabetes and other serious illnesses. A preventative alert has been issued and epidemiological surveillance has been reinforced. High-risk groups include older adults and people with diabetes or wounds with loss of sensation.
It is recommended to keep wounds clean and covered, and to seek medical attention if signs of infection or the presence of larvae appear.
