Italy has confirmed its first case of rabies since 2011 in a dog illegally imported from Morocco, which transited through Spain before entering Italy in December 2025. The dog was euthanized and diagnosed on May 27, 2026. More than 30 exposed people received treatment, and animals that had been in contact with the dog were placed under observation. An emergency vaccination campaign was carried out for 4,400 dogs and 1,000 cats in Vittorio Veneto.
