The first case of raccoon rabies in a stray cat has been confirmed in Godmanchester, Montérégie Region, Quebec, Canada. This marks the first documented transmission from wildlife to a domestic species in the province. Three people have received post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after contact with the animal. Since January 2016, 126 cases of raccoon rabies have been reported in Quebec, primarily affecting raccoons and skunks. The Estrie, Montérégie, and Centre-du-Québec regions are affected. Pet vaccination is strongly encouraged, and contact with wild animals should be avoided.
