Taiwan has reported its first case of Japanese encephalitis in 2026.
The patient, a woman in her 60s from Minxiong Township, Chiayi County, developed symptoms including fever and confusion in early June. She has no history of travel abroad. Health authorities have stepped up surveillance, deployed mosquito traps, and provided health education, urging residents to take precautions against mosquitoes and vaccinate children.
The Japanese encephalitis season in Taiwan runs from May to October, with peaks in June and July.
Confirmed cases in previous years (2022-2025) were 2, 6, 8, and 1, respectively.
