Fiji has declared a national HIV outbreak since January 2025, with a 14-fold increase in new diagnoses in five years.
Approximately 1.6% of the adult population is living with HIV, and the prevalence in prenatal care exceeds 2%. In 2025, one child was born with HIV every week and one died every month. UNAIDS estimates that the number of people living with HIV in Fiji increased from 8,900 in 2025 to 12,000 in 2026.
The epidemic is the fastest growing globally, driven by methamphetamine use among young people aged 20 to 34.
