An analysis estimates the cost of treating hospitalized pediatric typhoid cases in Kenya.
Typhoid fever poses a considerable health burden in Kenya, causing approximately 48,000 cases annually in children under 15 years old.
The total median cost of treatment from a societal perspective is US$96.95, representing a significant economic burden for households and the healthcare system. It is estimated that 24% of rural households and 27% of urban households could face catastrophic health expenditures if they had to pay 100% of treatment costs out-of-pocket. The introduction of the typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) in 2025 is expected to reduce this financial burden.
