The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reached 7,404 confirmed cases and 3,577 deaths, making it the deadliest epidemic in the country’s history.

In the last 24 hours, 59 new infections and 32 deaths were recorded. The fatality rate is 48.3%. The province of Ituri is the epicenter, accounting for 77.7% of cases, but the epidemic has spread to other provinces. Geographical spread and access difficulties are hindering containment.

This outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, is the second largest globally, surpassed only by the West African epidemic (2014-2016). The DRC has experience with outbreaks, having recorded more than a dozen since 1976.
