Drone incidents at European airports

May 23, 2026

Ten European airports have experienced drone incidents in less than two years, impacting air safety and tourism operations. Preventative closures and traffic suspensions have been documented in cities such as Vilnius, Poland; Copenhagen; Alicante; Brussels; Munich; Oslo; Aalborg; Billund; London (Gatwick); Madrid; and Palma. The earliest and most impactful incident occurred at Gatwick in December 2018, affecting nearly 1,000 flights. Authorities suspect hybrid warfare, although Russia denies this. The difficulty in identifying the perpetrators and the possibility of false alarms are paralyzing operations.
