August 6, 2026

A multistate Salmonella Javiana outbreak is under investigation by the CDC, FDA, and public health agencies. Jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, are suspected of being contaminated. A total of 345 cases have been reported as of August 4, 2026, in 27 states, with 36 hospitalizations (12% of 291 people with available information) and no deaths.

Cases began between June 19 and July 20, 2026. Ninety-three percent of the 191 people interviewed reported eating at Mexican-style restaurants (Chipotle, QDOBA) before becoming ill, with meal dates between June 14 and July 14, 2026. Twenty-seven outbreaks were identified at Chipotle and QDOBA restaurants in seven states, with jalapeño peppers, red onion, cilantro, and avocado as common ingredients.
