Twenty-six cases of West Nile Fever have been confirmed in Extremadura during 2026, resulting in one death. Currently, three patients remain hospitalized at the Don Benito-Villanueva Hospital and one at the Mérida Hospital. In 2025, 39 cases and five deaths were recorded in the region. The Extremadura Health Service (SES) has implemented a 2026 Vector Surveillance Plan, reinforcing entomological surveillance for the early detection of the Culex mosquito, the vector of the West Nile virus, using fixed and mobile traps in Don Benito and Cáceres. Individual and community prevention measures, as well as vector control, have been implemented.
