A passenger bus overturned in the province of Boumerdès, Algeria, resulting in at least 25 deaths and 44 injuries. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, including the Boumerdès University Hospital, where Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb was present. Algeria continues to have a high rate of road accidents. In 2025, 26,976 accidents with victims were recorded, resulting in 3,838 deaths and 37,020 injuries, representing increases compared to 2024 in both the number of accidents and the number of deaths and injuries.
The National Road Safety Delegation attributed more than 96% of accidents to human error, especially speeding, inattention, dangerous overtaking, and violations of traffic regulations.
The Boumerdès rollover is among the most serious bus accidents in the country in recent years. In June 2016, a collision between a coach and a truck on the road between Aflou and Laghouat resulted in 32 deaths and 22 injuries; in August 2015, another bus crashed through a bridge barrier in Algiers and plunged into the Oued El Harrach river, causing 18 deaths and 21 injuries. These incidents advise travelers to use authorized companies, avoid nighttime travel whenever possible, and ensure that vehicles are equipped with seat belts and are in good working order.
